For Silex Labs team I have tried several solutions to share files easily, for free, with privacy. This need is critical for collaboration among people and also for one to share the files across one's devices. My research was oriented toward an organization need.
The tools I reviewed have desktop integration and file sharing options as good or better than dropbox. They are completely free to use no matter how much data you use - except that in some cases the organization has to host the shared files somewhere.
It appears that the tools also have mobile apps (paid option for OwnCloud), which is cool to backup your phone's pictures for example.
BitTorrent Sync is proprietary but free, released by the famous bit torrent team, which sells services for their technologies.
It uses peer to peer (P2P), so you have nothing to host, you can put terabytes of data, no need of a server or hosting.
And P2P is very very fast to sync your files across computers.
Important drawbacks : at least two computers must be on simultaneously for it to sync files.
Ajaxplorer is Free and open source, and therefore you will never be asked to pay anything, but you are supposed to give a little time back, with bug report for example.
With this tool, files and other data (music, calendar, ...) are stored on a server and managed with PHP. You own your data, and you must ad administer the users and host the data yourself (shared hosting is fine).
Clearly Ajaxplorer is my favorite of the three tools. It is fast, and worked fine out of the box for me. Installation worked perfectly.
The design is sober and the tool is perfect for an organization like ours.
OwnCloud is open source but not free, their business model is to release paid mobile apps.

I found OwnCloud very cool for personal use, good design and you have a small itunes with your music accessible anywhere.
But it is quite slow though and I had hard times during installation (latest version of php is required and access rights problems).
Nevertheless it works and it's a good product
